During a lazy Saturday afternoon, there was a person asked on one of the mailing list about the orientation of the Bennic FPP capacitor. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any Bennic FPP on my shelves. Only XPP was available. So here you go, the Bennic XPP Capacitor orientation check.
From the measurement, we can see that the outer foil of this Bennic XPP capacitor located on the left side (as we read ‘Bennic’ word from left to right). So theoretically speaking, this side should be use as input on the signal application or ground on the power supply application.
The measurement of the inner foil. Less prone to interference compared to the outer foil one.
The measurement result doesn’t always reflect the best in sound, but this will advise the correct way to use the capacitor.

December 23, 2012 07:20Dear Jimmy. I got in on a thread about break-in period on caps and was told that I was chasing dragons. When I stated that all things in the know universe change they told me I had no proof that film cap change and need break-in . I ask you and your friend to help me show them the dragon . Regards

December 23, 2012 11:24Hi Thom,
I have no interest in such discussion. Sorry about that.
Let them be the ignorant, and let me be the retarded guy chasing the dragon. Case closed, everybody is happy.
Thanks.

December 25, 2012 12:59Hi Thom,
I enjoy reading those experts experimenting with multi million $ equipments like SY, JC, etc. Also enjoy good reading from many of diyaudio folks like you.
But for me, at least at this moment, I do enjoy the audio and blogging for my own sake. Perhaps someday I will come up with some idea or evidence about this break-in capacitor and some any other things considered that makes me as a ‘retarded audiophool’. But ‘someday’ means when I really want to do it. Just dont wait for it 🙂 as I’m not doing this to prove anything to anyone.
Let me tell you a story. Around 8 years ago, I came to an audio shop. I planned to purchase an amplifier. The system there were Musical Fidelity (CDP, preamp, and amp) and Focal bookshelf speaker. The cable was TaraLabs. I asked them to play some song. On the list, I saw Jeniffer Warnes. Simply I asked to play the first track, Rock You Gently which I was quite familiar with. I was surprised to hear the vocal was a little bit off the center, slightly to the left side. Well, this was not a cheap system and to get a center vocal should be a piece of cake. I asked the guy, but he just mumbling (and think I’m stupid, moron, find excuse not to buy, or whatsoever). I ran to the back of the system, checked the cable. Voila, I saw the right loudspeaker cable was connected wrongly (against the arrow direction on the cable itself). The left one was correct though. I asked the guy to change the cable to the right direction. He said sorry that this system just returned from an audio show and it seemed one of his worker installed them incorrectly. I can see that he was surprised that I could notice the different. We ran another test with same track and yes, the vocal was on the center.
Morale of the story: cable direction does exist and I’m telling this story as a real evidence (well, should I lie at X’Mas night?). This story is quite unique as it happened instantly, without any preparation like blind testing. Have some more stories about some other interesting experiments, but maybe I need to find right time to share.
Merry Christmas.
Thanks.

December 26, 2012 06:30People are all different we see this every day . Why most people think that they are the reference standard and it is not possible for any one else to be more in tune with their surrounding and events . This always entertains me . It has been my held belief that listening has more to do with the brain then the ears. To that end some 30 plus years a go did a blind listening test for a head amp (pre-preamp) caps . 4 out of 7 Audiophiles liked the Tantalum over the poyprops . This lead me to be mindful of people taste and differences. Yes cable are directional because they where made in one direction and the stress of making it is in one direction the signal is not a sine wave but an ac wave of a non repeating uniform shape .
I ask related to my question about break-in of caps how it was that these film caps where unlike any thing else in that they did not change . The answers was prove it changed . At that point an exchanged with them was of no good .
It is allway interesting to hear from you thank.

Thanks.

January 23, 2013 12:34Hay Jimmy, i would like to know your opinion about Solen and Bennic FPP
do they sound different???
i mean at the same exact value off course
which one have better quality??
solen or Bennic FPP??
i’ll use it as XO on my H200 satellite
THnX

January 23, 2013 15:01Hi Jakub,
Unfortunately, I don’t have it.
Sorry.
Thanks.

January 23, 2013 15:02Hi Draco,
Solen is softer/warmer, while Bennic slightly more open and add some ‘sparkling’ on the mid-hi.
This is from my observation. I could be wrong.
Thanks.
Draco
January 25, 2013 23:37i’ve already ordered bennic FPP for my H200
is there are the same orientation with XPP?
THnX jim

January 25, 2013 23:38i think orientation is not a problem with this kind of caps before, i get it wrong
hahahah

January 31, 2013 11:31Hi Draco,
I haven’t tried it, but mostly they are the same.
Thanks.
